The Commemoration of the Death of the Lord Jesus Christ



1. Question: When did the last supper of the Lord Jesus Christ take place?

Answer: The last supper of the Lord Jesus Christ with the twelve apostles took place in the evening before Christ was betrayed and arrested and nailed on the Cross.

(Matthew 26:20-21, NIV) When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. (Matthew 26:21) And while they were eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.

(Mark 14:17-18, NIV) When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. (Mark 14:18) While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.”

(Luke 22:14-15, NIV) When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. (Luke 22:15) And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

2. Question: What does the bread without yeast which Christ broke and gave to his disciples during the last supper symbolize?

Answer: The bread without yeast symbolizes the body of the Lord Jesus Christ.

(Matthew 26:26, NIV) “While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.

(Mark 14:22, NIV) While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.

(Luke 22:16, 19) For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 22:19) And he {Jesus Christ} took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

(I Corinthians 11:24, NIV) and when he {Jesus Christ} had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

3. Question: What does the cup of fruit juice of the vine that Christ gave to his disciples to drink during the last supper symbolize?

Answer: The cup of fruit juice of the vine that Christ has given to his disciples and drank during the last supper symbolizes his blood which is the new covenant for the forgiveness of sins.

(Matthew 26:27-29, NIV) Then he {Jesus Christ} took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. (Matthew 26:28) This is my blood of the [Some manuscripts: the new] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:29) I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom.

(Mark 14:23-25, NIV) Then he (Jesus Christ) took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it. (Mark 14:24) “This is my blood of the [Some manuscripts: the new] covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. (Mark 14:25) “I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.

(Luke 22:17-18, 20, NIV) After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. (Luke 22:18) For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (Luke 22:20) In the same way, after the supper he (Jesus Christ) took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

(I Corinthians 11:25, NIV) In the same way, after supper he (Jesus Christ) took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

4. Question: What is the significance of eating the bread without yeast that symbolizes the body of Christ; and drinking in the cup of fruit juice of the vine that symbolizes the blood of Christ?

Answer: Those who eat the bread without yeast and drink in the cup of fruit juice of the vine proclaim the death of the Lord Jesus Christ until his next coming.

(I Corinthians 11:26, NIV) For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

5. Question: Why do the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ have to eat the bread without yeast and drink in the cup of fruit juice of the vine throughout their lifetime?

Answer: The followers of the Lord Jesus Christ have to to eat the bread without yeast and drink in the cup of fruit juice of the vine throughout their lifetime as told by the Lord in memory of him and to have eternal life.

(Luke 22:19, NIV) And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

(I Corinthians 11:24-25, NIV) “and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (I Corinthians 11:25) In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.

(John 6:53-56, NIV) Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. (John 6:54) Whoever eats my (Christ) flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:55) For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. (John 6:56) Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.

The followers of Jesus Christ must do this throughout their lifetime in remembrance of him (Luke 22:19; I Corinthians 11:24-25), and to have eternal life (John 6:53-56).
