Q1. This sentence came from the holy mouth of our Lord Jesus, what are the blessings that you will receive if you will read and study the scriptures?
A. (a) Know the Lord Jesus, and (b) have eternal life.
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,” (Jn. 5:39) (NIV)
Q2. Which of the scriptures does the Lord Jesus speak of?
A. The Scriptures that are inspired by God.
“15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,” (2 Tim. 3:15-16) (NIV)
Not all scriptures are inspired by God. There is only one book of God and it is called the Bible. This is the Book that people should not get tired of reading and who wants to obtain eternal life. It is also the Book that testifies of our beloved Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Q3. What should we know about the certainty that the Scriptures, the Bible, written and COMPLETED are inspired by God?
A. Those who write are of God's will that was carried by His power of the Holy Spirit.
“20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Pet. 1:20-21) (NIV)
The Holy Spirit is the power of God from above which indwell (Luke 24:49) in the people, especially of the prophets, to write the revelation of his will to the people.
Q4. By studying and accepting the wisdom from the scriptures, what kind of wisdom can man gain?
A. Wisdom of salvation
“… Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Tim. 3:15) (NIV)
While the wisdom found in books of this world are limited and can only be beneficial in this life, and can never save and lead to eternal life.
Q5. For those who learn wisdom from the Bible, what can they benefit from this life?
A. They will learn about good works and living a peaceful life.
“16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim. 3:16-17) (NIV)
Because the Bible is the Word inspired by God, so the wisdom that is learned here is from above. James, the servant of God has something to say about it:
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” (James 3:17) (NIV)
James also said that:
“13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.” (James 3:13-16) (NIV)
Q6. Is it an honor to study and research the HOLY scriptures?
A. An honor, like the inhabitants of Berea, who became more honorable than the Thessalonians in their efforts to search the scriptures daily.
“10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” (Acts 17:10-11) (NIV)
Q7. At this time, should we make sure that the scriptures taught by those who study the gospel, are according to the Holy Word of God?
A. It is important to be sure because many false prophets will come to the world, according to prophecy.
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 Jn. 4:1) (NIV)
Apostle Paul says that we should not add to the true teaching from above.
“Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.” (1 Cor. 4:6) (NIV)
We are sure that the things that are written are what Paul mentions in his second letter to Timothy, which is none other than the holy scriptures inspired by God, the Bible.
Q8. Did the Lord Jesus use what was written in the Bible, when he was still on earth, against the temptation of the devil?
A. “4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”(Mat. 4:4)
“…“It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Mat. 4:7) (NIV)
“Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” (Mat. 4:10) (NIV)
At the time when the Lord Jesus was on earth, he used the words written in the Bible to defend Himself from temptation and to withdraw from the devil. After the victory, the angels came and served Him.
Q9. How effective is the word of God that is written in His book?
A. The word of the Almighty God is tested, alive, effective and sharper than any two-edged sword.
“5 “Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.” (Prov. 30:5-6) (NIV)
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12) (NIV)
